ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM & ITS NEIGHBOURHOOD , OXFORD

Surath, my younger son took us to Oxford on a beautiful sunny day. (Sunday, 30/05/2010).

We had a plan of spending a good amount of time @ Ashmolean Museum. The oldest Museum of GB - in fact, I read in a brochure that it is the oldest Musum of the World !.Formal status came to a growing collection in 1683 AD. Many persons have contributed over decades to growth of this museum to the current stature. One of them is Arthur Evans who was appointed the Keeper in 1884 AD. Aquisitions were done in such a volume during his tenure that a new structure behind the then Art Gallery had to be constructed at the rear of the University Galleries.

The present Ashmolean was created in 1908 AD by combining two coolections - that of the Oxford University and the original Ashmolean Museum.It has now 4 floors, -G ( basement ) to 3rd floor.Those who are interested in a 'Virtual Tour' of Ashmoleun Museum @ http://www.chem.ox.ac.uk/oxfordtour/ashmolean/.

Before I comment on my impressions of the display, I shall invite the reader to two special points ;

• The first is on the gallery on the art of creation of Images. It has images of various 'mood's. What drew my attention in this gellery is a quote from Plinny, written in 5th century BC.
• A line diadram of the immigration of people across Europe centuries ago.

Among the other objects on display, what I liked most were the gallery for British porcelain, an Egyptian temple , dress of a samurai, vases and other potteries from Greece and a collection of textile designs, some torn and fragile, yet preserved for posterity very carefully.
