TERRA COTTA TEMPLES OF BENGAL - VII
64Temples at Ilambazar,Dt.- Birbhum, West bengal (india)
On our way to Shantiniketan from Calcutta
My wife - Ruby. my son's friend from New York University - Aviv Mader and I went for a brief visit to the fair at Shantiniketan on 30/12/09. We started early in the morning from Calcutta. We stopped @ Ilambazar and Surul village to capture photos of terra cotta temples.Ilambazar is a small mofusil town in Birbhum district and is quite a prominent place in Calcutta - Shantiniketan route.Surul village is a locality close to Shantiniketan, just after 'Kharimati' hotel.
The temples here are small , but, well-preserved. Credit goes to the family of owners and local people. We are very happy with our visits and the photographs we have brought with us.Here you see two rather complicated panels from the nice octagonal temple @ Ilambazar , which has lost its roof and now covered with corrugated sheets !
Before closing, I would like to add that we visited two terra cotta temples @ Ilambazar and none of them is the 3-arched 'Lakshmi-Janardan' temple Late Mukul De or Late David McCuchion wrote about. If anyone can give a direction to that temple, I shall be very much to him/her.
I would also like to add that on a 'marketday, entry to the temple area is difficult as well as fun.Vegetables, potato, onions are very cheap. My wife loads of potatoes and onions after a brief session with camera . Here are two photos from her camera too.
